School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “What Casts a Shadow,” an exhibition of multimedia work by 11 SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. The exhibition will be on view Wednesday, May 15, through Monday, June 3, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 E 23rd Street, New York City.

“What Casts a Shadow” explores the connections between individuals and their environments, and the ramifications of change, both positive and negative. Through ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and video, the work on view represents “process” as an ongoing creative endeavor. Actively grappling with their subject matter as it intersects with their lived experiences, the artists delve into the frictions inherent to evolution. Calling upon varied points of influence—pop culture, spiritual teachings and familial structures—their respective works incorporate personal histories while considering the next steps in the here and now. By sharing their own stories and gesturing toward potential trajectories for development, their work challenges the status quo and offers an opportunity to reflect on ways to cultivate a more holistic, sustainable society.

Artists featured in this exhibition are Shiyan Chen, Yining Fang, Tyson, Houseman, Ahyun Jeon, Joseph O'Malley, Grace Qian, Zoe Toscano, Sadie Withers, Grant EZE Yang, Xinyi Yang and Jen Yoon.

The SVA Gramercy Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm.
