School of Visual Arts presents “PoV: Persistence of Vision,” an exhibition of work by BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects students, curated by department senior systems administrators Brian Frey and Joseph Mulvanerty. The show is on view Saturday, April 14, through Saturday, May 5, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133 West 21st Street, New York City.

“PoV: Persistence of Vision” invites participants to move beyond the screen and to step into the point of view of the computer animation and effects artist. From a curatorial standpoint, the exhibition seeks to move beyond a frozen image on the wall and beyond standard 2D representation. A single frame taken out of context cannot represent the totality of the experience of watching a film or animation. Rather than try to freeze a moment in time or to present finished animation or video pieces, the exhibition seeks to peel back the curtain and present all the grays, the moments-in-between, the sketches and the real-world artifacts that show what the process of creation in BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects is like.

Fourth-year students were invited to submit concept art, style frames, mood boards, storyboards, sketches, character wireframes, character rigs, matte paintings, sculpture, props, wardrobe, scripts or other objects that could illuminate the hidden world between frames. Deliberately showing the hand of the artist, “PoV: Persistence of Vision” shines a tiny spotlight on all of the unique and beautiful parts and decisions that come to form a unified whole in a finished film or animation.

BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects students at SVA have access to the most advanced digital applications and are guided by faculty at the top of their fields to develop both the personal and professional capabilities expected in the top tiers of highly competitive creative industries. Using a production-based curriculum, students create portfolios and gain the experience necessary to launch them into professional careers of their own design or at many of the top digital agencies, visual effects and animation houses and production studios around the world, working in the fields of commercial film, television and video game production.
