Letterpress is a medium of endless possibilities. This course will start with the basics: ink, rollers, type, paper and a press, and introduce the setting of type, locking up a form and using spacing materials to fill out the press. Relief printing from woodcuts, linoleum and photo-polymer plates made from digital output will also be introduced. Students will learn to print with both the Vandercook flatbed cylinder presses and traditional clamshell letterpresses. Printing on T-shirts and bags, printing from found objects (collagraphs), and even press cutting and folding will be explored. Past projects have included stationery, wedding invitations, poetry, children's books, artist books and calendars. No previous printing experience is required.
Note: Access to the printshop outside of class hours is available to continuing education students enrolled in printmaking courses. Access to the printmaking facilities outside of class hours is as follows: Monday through Friday, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Hours are based on classroom availability. Access will not be available outside these designated open access times. Access to the printshop terminates on the last day of the scheduled course.
