From artist, activist and faculty member (and SVA alumnus) Sophia Dawson (BFA 2010 Fine Arts) comes an exhibition of work inspired by Dawson’s recently published book Correspondence, a collection of letters and ephemera from incarcerated members of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Movement. On view through September 10 from the windows of the Flatiron Project Space and curated in partnership with The Bishop Gallery, “Correspondence: The Installation” features select works from Dawson’s “To Be Free” series, which explores, through large-scale portraiture, the stories of the 20+ remaining U.S.-held political prisoners who were jailed for their activism in the black liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s.

From the astonishing talent of our MFA Visual Narrative program, two special exhibitions are on view this month. Through September 6, “And Then…” features the thesis project of the class of 2021. These imaginative works from 11 recent graduates explore new frontiers in an ever-changing world. In this interactive online exhibition, viewers can watch videos, read artist statements and even subscribe to debut issues of these original comics and visual stories.

And from August 18 until September 17, Open Studios will offer the latest projects from first- and second-year students from this summer semester for public viewing. These students seek to expose truths through narrative structure through a broad range of new-media techniques, including live-action videos, storyboards, animation, game design and sequential art.
