MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with Rita Nannini, a conceptual documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, part of the i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Nannini’s work explores different ways of viewing. She is a 2021 recipient of the New York City Artists Corps Grant. Her first monograph on all the terminal stops of the New York City subway work was released in April 2023. Nannini also received grants for photography from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Behind AI’s advancements lies a tapestry of human interactions, troves of user-generated data, and labor, often unseen but foundational. As AI’s capabilities continue to expand, this conversation peels back AI’s layers, revealing its human and environmental core beyond the code. How do automation technologies like AI impact the future of labor and the labor market? If AI is perceived as a new “black box” —a layer of abstraction that obscures the underlying physical and human resources, rendering them invisible and replaceable—how might this affect the evolution of social class relations and the emergence of new social conflicts? Artists Stephanie Dinkins and Josh Kline will join professor and SHARE Foundation co-founder Vladan Joler for a conversation moderated by Isin Onol, Director of Curatorial Research at MA Curatorial Practice.

MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by award-winning and widely exhibited artist Athena LaTocha, part of Talks, the program’s series of lectures by artists, writers and critics. LaTocha’s (b. Anchorage, Alaska) massive works on paper explore the relationship between human-made and natural worlds, in the wake of Earthworks artists from the 1960s and 1970s. Informed by her upbringing in the wilderness of Alaska, the artist incorporates materials such as ink, lead, earth and wood, while looking at correlations between mark-marking and displacement of materials made by industrial equipment and natural events.

MFA Photography, Video and Related Media presents a talk with Drew Sawyer, an art historian and curator who holds the title of the Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Sawyer has previously held curatorial positions at the Brooklyn Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He received a 2020 Award for Excellence from the Association of Art Museum Curators.

MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with Georgia native and Brooklyn-based artist Eric Hart Jr. (b.1999), part of the i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. As a photographer, Hart’s stylized portraiture is an exploration of Blackness and queerness. His visual language is heavily influenced by the notion of rejecting control. Through themes of power, freedom and historical representation, Hart strives to foster consciousness for audiences as he displays people like himself in all of their power and beauty.

MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by Shanzhai Lyric, part of Talks, the program’s series of lectures by artists, writers and critics. Shanzhai Lyric (founded by Ming Lin & Alex Tatarsky) is a body of research focusing on radical logistics and linguistics through the prism of technological aberration and nonofficial cultures. The project takes inspiration from the experimental English of Shanzhai T-shirts made in China and proliferating across the globe to examine how the language of counterfeit uses mimicry, hybridity and permutation to both revel in and reveal the artifice of global hierarchies.

MA Curatorial Practice presents a talk with Warsaw, Poland-born Magdalena Moskalewicz, chief curator at FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. An art historian, author and editor, Moskalewicz has engaged in the revisionist rewriting of art histories and in exploring parallels between the postsocialist and postcolonial conditions through both academic publications and curatorial practice. Her scholarly research has focused on socialist modernism, neo-avant gardes, global exhibition histories and cultural policies, while her curatorial collaborations with living artists critically investigate particular histories, localities and identities with the goal of reshaping dominant narratives.

This month’s offerings include thesis events, exhibitions and talks addressing topics ranging from social justice, grief and AI’s impact on the future of labor.
