A talk from Brooklyn-based documentary filmmaker and photographer Joe Quint, part of MPS Digital Photography's i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Quint’s work consists largely of telling well-intentioned and respectful stories about the human condition and people on journeys—those who are either experiencing great challenges or who have overcome such challenges. Quint has an ongoing project about the impact of gun violence on a diverse group of Americans and he’s recently completed an award-winning film about a gun violence and a domestic violence survivor who has channeled her traumas into service.

In honor of The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art's virtual exhibition “Identity, Art and Migration,” BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the SVA Honors Program present this panel discussion which probes historical and all-too contemporary fault lines of persecution, migration, intolerance, cultural complexity and art. Historians, curators and artists come together to discuss the life and work of artists who were persecuted by the German Nazi regime and came to the US during the first half of the 20th century, while also hearing from living artists who are facing the challenge of relocation to the US and its transformative effect on individual identity today. How do artists, with their particular set of sensibilities, respond in their work and life to migration and exile?

A talk from Maria Lind, the counselor of Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of Sweden in Moscow and formerly director of the Testa konsthall, part of MA Curatorial Practice's The Public Seminars, an ongoing series bringing world-renowned artists, curators and thinkers to a global audience for presentations and discussions. Set in the Russian provincial capital of Izhevsk, Lind’s new exhibition, "Art & Life in Critical Zones," homes in on artists whose practices break from the centuries-long idea that there is a split between nature and culture, signaling new ways to inhabit what French philosopher Bruno Latour calls "critical zones"—"the skin of the living earth" now at a moment of incredible fragility, calling out for extraordinary re-thinking of such things as land, landscape, territory and homeland.
