February 3, 7:00 - 8:30pm | Nick Brandt: The Day May Break

A talk with internationally acclaimed photographer Nick Brandt, whose work focuses mostly on the rapidly disappearing natural world as a result of environmental destruction, climate change and man’s actions, presented by SVA Continuing Education. The talk will be followed by a Q&A. This will be a great opportunity to ask about anything from long-term projects and their place in our industry to Nick’s beautiful work.

February 6, 5:00 - 6:00pm | Unions 101 with Chrissy Fellmeth and Rachel Gitlevich

BFA Animation faculty Chrissy Fellmeth and Titmouse Union Committee member Rachel Gitlevich will give an exclusive talk on Twitch surrounding unions in the animation industry. Take a guided tour on what unions are, how they function and what they do for workers. Learn the truth and misconceptions about unions to help you better understand what they are and how they function. The talk will also cover valuable information about working in the animation industry in New York as a freelancer including rare predatory practices in the working world.

A lecture from Beacon, NY-based artist Chie Fueki. Her work is included in permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX; Orlando Museum of Art, FL; the Pizzuti Collection at Columbus Museum of Art, OH, and the San Jose Museum of Art.

February 8, 7:00 - 8:30pm | Crista Dix

Join MPS Digital Photography for a lecture with Griffin Museum of Photography‘s new executive director Crista Dix, part of the program’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series, now in its 10th year. Dix has written essays about photography, introducing creative artists’ work to a broader community. She has been a member of numerous panels and discussions, juried creative competitions and has participated in major portfolio reviews across the country in cities like Houston, Portland, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and New Orleans.

February 10, 12:00 - 1:00pm | Riots and Power: A Radical Examination through Art and Exhibitions

Berlin-based curator Natasha Ginwala’s recent exhibition, Riots: Slow Cancellation of the Future, chronicles an international history of uprisings, which is elaborated in her co-edited book Nights of the Dispossessed: Riots Unbound. A contributor to both the exhibition and the book, artist Natascha Sadr Haghighian has turned the German Pavilion in the Venice Biennale into a transit camp for asylum seekers and traced the history and application of police militarization and racial profiling tactics. The two speak about racial violence and the deepening crises of capitalism in an “age of riots.”

Join SVA MPS Digital Photography BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the Honors Program for a talk with the author of The World in a Grain of Sand, which offers a framework for reading literature from the global South that goes against the grain of dominant theories in cultural studies, especially postcolonial theory.

February 11, 6:00 - 9:00pm | Winter Drawing Marathon

This complementary Drawing Marathon session offered by SVA Continuing Education and BFA Visual & Critical Studies and led by visual artist and SVA faculty member Peter Hristoff, encourages participants to work in a free and expressive manner, with the goal of each participant to create approximately 100 drawings in three hours.

February 16, 7:00 - 8:30pm | An Intimate Discussion with Platon on a Life and Career in Photography

In this intimate discussion presented by SVA Continuing Education, renowned photographer Platon challenges you to reach deep inside yourself and find the answers you’ve been searching for about a life in photography. Your burning questions will serve as the blueprint for an honest, motivational and inspirational talk that will, perhaps, help you find your role in this world as a photographer. Questions about Platon’s career, photography, method, industry insight, as well as those questions you’re sometimes too afraid to ask, will be welcome.

February 17, 5:30 - 7:30pm | In Their Own Words: The Legacy of Black and African American Artists

In honor of Black History Month, this intergenerational panel discussion of multidisciplinary Black and African American artists will develop a dialogue focused on the lived experiences of Black and African American artists, including themes of inspiration, identity, visibility, resilience, social justice and wisdom.

February 18, 12:00 - 1:30pm | Community Lecture Series Book Launch: Intersectionality in the Arts Psychotherapies

Editors Jessica Collier & Corrina Eastwood will be joined by various chapter authors including SVA Faculty member S.J. Langer, LCSW-R, WPATH Certified, SOC7 Mentor, in a discussion of their 2022 publication, Intersectionality in the Arts Psychotherapies, presented by SVA MPS Art Therapy.

February 22, 4:00 - 5:00pm | Practice Lecture Series: Beatrice Glow

Join MFA Art Practice for a lecture with artist-researcher Beatrice Glow, known for leveraging interactive multimedia installations and multi-sensory experiences in service of public history and just futures. Her diverse practice includes sculptural installations, olfactory art, emerging media and multilingual publishing.

February 22, 6:30 - 8:00pm | Vera Lutter

In the second installment of MFA Photography, Video and Related Media’s Spring Scheimpflug lecture series, distinguished alumna and award-winning photographer Vera Lutter will give an artist talk via Zoom. Lutter has gained international recognition for her uniquely produced camera obscura images of industrial and architectural sites around the world.

February 22, 7:00 - 8:30pm | David Burnett

Join MPS Digital Photography for a lecture with photojournalist David Burnett, part of the program’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series, now in its 10th year. Burnett spent two years covering the war in Vietnam, joined the weekly LIFE Magazine, and when LIFE closed, worked for the French news agency GAMMA, before starting Contact Press Images with editor Robert Pledge in 1975. For the last five decades, he has worked for magazines in the U.S. and Europe and hopes to compile a series of essays, both written and photographic, in the next year.
