Around the Fire
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Around the Fire,” a juried exhibition of multidisciplinary works by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries, the exhibition will be on view online from Tuesday, June 6, through Monday, July 9, at galleries.sva.edu.
Throughout history, humanity has gathered around the fire, literally and figuratively, to understand our relationship with the world and ourselves. Attempting to preserve our history and secure our future we have told stories in song, spoken word and dance. When documenting their world, the artists in this exhibition look inward while also gathering in the circle of humanity. They chronicle our relationships with our environment and with each other, telling a story that is as timeless as it is of the present and as individual as it is collective. They join in the enduring tradition of humankind's storytellers, crafting multilayered mythologies that celebrate, critique and archive the material of our shared experience.
Artists featured in this exhibition are Chris Cortez (BFA Fine Arts), María Durán Sampedro (MFA Fine Arts), Mia Sweeney Gahrmann (BFA Photography and Video), Natasha Korzeniewski (MAT Art Education), Xinyi Liu (MFA Fine Arts), Raquel Loeza (BFA Fine Arts), Mengmeng Ma (BFA Photography and Video), Ariel Miner (BFA Illustration), Will Premru (BFA Photography and Video), Maria Tinoco (BFA Illustration) and Yeshan Zhang (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media).
