133/141 West 21st Street, 1st floor, New York, NY 10011School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Portrait Show,” an exhibition of coursework by SVA students. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, February 25, through Tuesday, March 23, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery Windows, 133/141 West 21st Street, and can be viewed safely from the sidewalk.
BFA Fine Arts faculty member and curator Brooke Larsen explains: “There are three principles at work in the self-portrait project: motivation—pick a mark and repeat it over and over, finding new ways to create lights and darks, square by square; curiosity—be willing to make changes along the way without controlling the outcome, one square at a time; and discipline—when a square is completed, don’t go back once a new square is started, and work on the drawing every day.”
The four videos on view, made by Michael Goldman with music written and performed by Stuart Fordyce, represent past portrait exhibitions of drawings by SVA first-year students from 2013 – 2016.
