Steven Universe, The Tale and more receive some Emmys love.
If the fall is the season for Oscar buzz and winter the time for the Academy Awards to shine, summer is the road leading to the Primetime Emmy Awards. The Emmys focus their recognition exclusively on television, with the significant awards divided into separate categories for Comedy and Drama, but also Animation, Special Effects, Interactive Media and more. And it wouldn’t be an Emmy announcement year without involvement and nominations for SVA alumni and community members and that’s precisely the case in 2018.
Leading the pack for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, was a big nod for The Tale, directed by BFA Film faculty member Jennifer Fox. Premiering at Sundance earlier this year and released on HBO in the spring, The Tale, a fragmented recollection story about sexual abuse, was nominated for Outstanding Television Movie in the drama category. The critically acclaimed movie also earned an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for its star Laura Dern.
Stranger Things is obviously a huge cultural phenomenon and a big hit for Netflix, and its supernatural elements are part of its tremendous success. Instrumental in that work is SVA alumnus Joel Sevilla (BFA 1999 Computer Art), a Visual Effects Supervisor on the show who earned an Outstanding Special Effects Emmy nomination.
Coco VR, Pixar′s first Oculus VR experience, was nominated for Outstanding Original Interactive Program and alumnus JD Gardner (BFA 2015 Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects) was one of the craftspersons who worked on the interactive adventure. Gardner will be sharing the piece later in the year at SVA’s After School Special.
Lastly, Cartoon Network′s popular and inclusive animated show Steven Universe, created by BFA 2009 Animation alumna Rebecca Sugar, was nominated for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program for the episode ”Jungle Moon.” This was Steven Universe′s fourth Emmy nomination given out back-to-back since 2015.
Below, some trailers from the nominated works. Congrats to all the nominees, and best of luck come September 17.
