Offering a glimpse into the history of the College and the collective talent of its acclaimed design and illustration faculty, SVA’s “Underground Images” exhibition, the ongoing traveling exhibition of SVA’s subway posters, is already world-renowned.

But this month, in celebration of Women’s History Month, SVA Galleries is presenting a special highlights exhibition from “Underground Images” on view at the ground-floor SVA Flatiron Windows located at 133/141 West 21st Street.

SVA placed its first woman-designed poster in New York City’s subway system in 1973—the same year the NYC Transit Authority named its first woman motorman—joining the push for gender parity across all sectors of American labor.

Spanning five decades, this small sampling from SVA’s nearly 200 subway posters highlights the dynamism, variety and creative breadth of the contribution of its women designers and artists. This exhibition extends a view into the vibrant legacy of one of the City's most enduring public art projects, on view before thousands of subway riders daily.

“SVA's subway posters arguably present the most publicly visible face of the College,” said Francis DiTommaso, the director of SVA Galleries. “What better medium, then, for honoring Women's History Month, than exhibiting a sampling of posters illustrated and designed by women from 1973 to the present day?”

“Underground Images” is organized by SVA faculty members Mirko Ilić and Francis Di Tommaso, director of SVA Galleries. Since 2007, Executive Vice President Anthony P. Rhodes has been the creative director for SVA’s subway posters and curator of “Underground Images.” The entire collection of posters in the exhibition can be seen on the SVA Galleries Flickr page.
