Artist and Educator Dr. Catherine Rosamond Named Chair of MAT Art Education at School of Visual Arts
Jul 31, 2018, New York, NY—School of Visual Arts President David Rhodes has announced the appointment of Dr. Catherine Rosamond as chair of the College’s MAT Art Education department, effective August 1, 2018. Rosamond succeeds the program’s founding chair Rose Viggiano, who is stepping down after 25 years of outstanding service at the College.
Dr. Rosamond comes to SVA after a decade of working in the art education program at Queens College, City University of New York, where she most recently served as program advisor. She has taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and has extensive experience as a student-teacher supervisor in area elementary, middle and high schools. Rosamond has been an art consultant for AHRC NYC, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, for over a decade. She is also a senior museum educator at the Museum of Arts and Design.
Rosamond regularly gives presentations at conferences and academic institutions on teaching within a framework of an artistic practice and has authored numerous articles on the subject. She is active within the art education community as a member of the American Educational Research Association, College Art Association and National Art Education Association. She is also a fine artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries in New York City and at Art Basel Miami Beach.
Established in 2000, SVA’s MAT Art Education program is offered as a full-time, one-year intensive or a two-year, part-time program that provides a hands-on learning environment in which student-teachers investigate educational issues and techniques, develop their own pedagogical philosophy and create personal artwork. Designed for students who have completed an undergraduate major in studio art, the program emphasizes collaboration and community and addresses the needs of diverse populations, including those with special needs.
“I am honored to join SVA to serve as chair of MAT Art Education and to work with faculty members who represent the best in the field,” Rosamond says. “While standards and policies concerning teacher licensure continue to change, I am committed to upholding and strengthening the unique curriculum of the department, which focuses on positioning preservice teachers as artists first.”
Rosamond holds an MA and an EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University; an AAS and a BFA from Parsons School of Design; and a BS and BA from Boston University.
