SVA Launches Inaugural Film Showcase, “SVA Premieres,” in Hollywood

Apr 10, 2016, New York, NY—School of Visual Arts is thrilled to announce it is going Hollywood. On June 1 and June 2, 2016, the famed art and design college will launch SVA Premieres, its film and animation showcase, at Linwood Dunn Theater in Los Angeles. SVA Premieres will feature the works of talented, recently graduated filmmakers to an audience of industry professionals.

During the two evenings of screenings, the film and animation communities will discover the next generation of up-and-coming filmmakers—poised to make their mark on the industry—through a curated selection of works by alumni from a number of SVA’s 32 undergraduate and graduate programs.

On Wednesday, June 1, SVA Premieres will kick off with a 90-minute animation and visual effects program, which will include work ranging from traditional hand-drawn and stop-motion animation to computer-generated 3D and visual effects.

On Thursday, June 2, SVA Premieres continues with a selection of live-action narrative and documentary films. The two-hour presentation will feature works that run the gamut of cinematic storytelling forms and showcase exemplary, emerging talent in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing.

To further the showcase’s mission of introducing the next wave of artists and filmmakers to the industry, the 8:00pm screenings will be preceded by 7:00pm welcoming receptions and followed by dessert receptions to give industry members an opportunity to meet the artists featured in the program.

SVA Premieres is championed by an honorary committee of industry professionals including Andrew Dayton (co-founder, Steel Wool Games), Zackary Drucker (co-producer, Transparent), Randall Emmett (executive producer, End of Watch), Geoffrey Fletcher (Academy Award-winning screenwriter, Precious), Craig Gillespie (director, Lars and the Real Girl), Yvette Kaplan (co-director, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America), Alex Kupershmidt (animator, The Lion King), Christopher Newman (Academy Award-winning sound mixer, The Exorcist), Bill Plympton (Academy Award-nominated animator, Your Face), Chris and Shannon Prynoski (founders, Titmouse, Inc.), Gillian Robespierre (director/writer, Obvious Child), Mike Roth (supervising producer/writer, Cartoon Network), Phil Rynda (VP of artist development, Nickelodeon), Carlos Saldanha (co-director, Ice Age), Lynn Shelton (director/writer, Humpday), Michael Simmonds (cinematographer, Big Fan), Tom Sito (animator, Aladdin), Mark Ulano (Academy Award-winning sound mixer, Titanic) and Kara Vallow (executive producer, Family Guy).

Companies on the honorary committee in support of SVA Premieres include Cartoon Network, Disney Television Animation, EFO Films, Hydraulx Visual Effects, Indiegogo, the International Documentary Association, The Molecule, Plymptoons, Steel Wool Games, Titmouse, Inc., Tribeca Film Institute, Visual Effects Society and Women Make Movies.

SVA alumni have been featured in film festivals across the globe, steering their own projects and making integral contributions to blockbuster releases. They have won Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes and awards at festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and Venice. Filmmakers and artists as diverse as Craig Gillespie, Yvette Kaplan, Lynn Shelton and Tom Sito, as well as Crystal Moselle (The Wolfpack), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game, Passengers), and Ti West (The House of the Devil) have all studied at SVA.
