The Film Directing residency at SVA offers emerging filmmakers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the craft of directing a short film. Great directors are great storytellers. This residency is designed to provide a comprehensive look into visual storytelling. Instruction will take place Monday through Thursday 10:00 am-12 noon, with studio hours in the afternoon 1:00 pm-4:00 pm. The residency includes sessions in screenwriting, directing and editing with workshops in cinematography, working with actors, table read and festivals. Participants will complete a three-to-five minute narrative short film, from script to post production; the program will conclude with a screening celebration at the SVA Graduate Center.
This residency is hosted by the MPS Film Directing Department. Residency participants will have access to our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities on West 21st Street. Industry professionals and faculty include Bob Giraldi, Alistair McMeekin, Cailin McFadden, Natasha Soto-Albors, Jacob Williamson, Rommel Genciana and Sean Patrick Reilly.
Prerequisites: Applicants must have a detailed, short film treatment prior to the beginning of the residency. Basic knowledge of film grammar and familiarity of nonlinear editing software is required.
This course is graded on a pass/fail system. A portfolio is required for review and acceptance to this program.
