This course focuses on the business of marketing and promotion for self-published and independent creators and their works: Identifying your creative voice and your story's core values and appeal, learning how to engage and participate in local events, connecting with like-minded peers, and building your audience and community. Though our focus is on the world of small press and independent publishing, the tools covered in this course are applicable to anyone looking to market themselves and their art in the age of the Internet. Assignments include the ins and outs of self-promotion, tabling at fairs, stocking books at shops, how to think about curation and performing live readings. Along the way, you'll learn about a wide variety of events available in NYC, the etiquette of networking and social media outreach. By the end of the course, students will have a deep well of promotional tools and the skills to know when and where to use them. This is an intermediate to professional course for those already working in publishing or self-publishing who are looking to elevate their promotional and professional practice.
Note: This course is held on campus at SVA.
