Unlock your imagination and production dreams with rapid prototyping. Digital fabrication is a design and manufacturing workflow where digital data directly drives manufacturing equipment. In this course students will be introduced to a wide array of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) tools and techniques, including large-format vinyl printing/cutting, UV printing, laser cutting and 3D printing. Students will learn how to create CAD (computer-aided design) files using an assortment of software, including Adobe Illustrator, VersaWorks and TinkerCad. By the end of the course each student will have completed several projects and will be able to translate future ideas they design on the computer into physical products.
Prerequisite: Strong computer fluency, such as a working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator or another vector-based software.
Note: Students are required to bring a laptop to each session. The materials fee covers a set amount of materials, including but not limited to 3D printing resin, laser cutting materials, and printing inks and papers. This course is held on campus at SVA in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility and fabrication space.
