This course will explore the importance of the actor director relationship as one of the most fundamental relationships in the filmmaking process. Throughout the semester, directors will have the opportunity to have in-depth discourse with professional actors on how to create authentic, nuanced and memorable performances on screen. Weekly lectures will delve into casting strategies for directors, script analysis, creating characters collaboratively, rehearsal techniques (including improvisation) and how to work with intimate material. In the last weeks of the course, each director will have the opportunity to use their new skills to cast, rehearse, direct and perform a dramatic scene of their choosing for an audience.
Note: This course is held on campus at SVA.
