Cinema verité in documentary filmmaking is in capturing an event as it is happening; filming in the present. In this workshop, through discussion and hands-on filming, students will explore the basics of verité camerawork and the craft of filming verité footage. Using a theater rehearsal as an example subject, students will work with the instructor and receive advice on how to film correctly, capture essential moments and record footage that gives an editor necessary material to craft a meaningful scene, maintaining the illusion of continuity. These techniques are also applicable to commercial, narrative and experimental works.
PREREQUISITES: Students must have previous cinematography experience and be comfortable filming with professional-quality video cameras.
NOTE: Equipment and facilities are available during class hours only. This course is held on campus at SVA.
