Music videos combine extensive film and editing techniques, color palettes, design and, of course, music. They play an important role in cultural production and consumption, at the intersection of serious art and commercialism. In this course we ask together: What is a music video and how is it made? Through lectures and workshopping, students will learn how to translate their ideas into reality and make their own music videos. They will also critically analyze the aesthetics and cultural significance of key examples of the form. This course is designed for visual artists, musicians and up-and-coming filmmakers.
NOTE: Production and editing equipment is not provided. Students must have their own editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X), laptops, or may create footage using their smartphones or video cameras. Basic knowledge of video editing is recommended. This course is held on campus at SVA.
