Fabric dyeing with indigo is an ancient practice. Its popularity is matched by its complex history and the variety of methods for building indigo vats and the coloring of fabrics. In this workshop students will explore the historical significance of indigo and learn about its artistic traditions and techniques. Two resist printing techniques will be covered: stitched shibori and soy paste resist.
NOTE: All dyeing tools and materials (including two cotton bandanas per student) will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring two additional small fabric items to transform by dyeing in indigo (natural fibers only: cotton, silk, linen, rayon, or wool). This course is held on campus at SVA.
