How to turn stories into drawings, paintings (using water-based paint), prints and collages is the focus of this course. Hands-on art-making is complemented with viewing and discussion of narrative art. Students will be introduced to imagery where stories appear; from ancient pictograms to painted vases to scrolls to contemporary graphic novels. We will explore a variety of art-making techniques from the traditional to the experimental. Themes are explored through a series of prompts, including getting started, creating narrative, storyboarding, using color, thinking about scale, developing characters, suggesting mood, drawing and incorporating the figure, space, time and movement, as well as some bookmaking and press-less printmaking. Some weeks are materials-based; others have more of a conceptual orientation. Using a range of newly acquired skills and formats, students will complete this course with art that is personal, political, fantastical, abstract, or historical.
