In this course students will immerse themselves in the meditative and eco-friendly process of developing colors primarily sourced from natural materials. Traditional and contemporary methods of natural dyeing and creating pigments will be explored, including dip-dyeing, direct application/printing on fiber and paper and ink-making using natural pigments. Essential steps for fabric preparation (mordanting and various painting processes) will be covered. We will also examine the historical and cultural stories behind pigments.
Note: Some home assignments, such as fabric preparation and creating lake pigments will be required. Students will be provided with essential materials during the first session. This course is held on campus at SVA.
