Making sculptures using computer-aided fabrication and rapid prototyping machines is the focus of this course. Students will explore various uses of 2D and 3D scanning software to create objects with the help of CNC and 3D printers. These technologies offer the ability to execute intricate and precise designs that would be impossible or extremely time-consuming with traditional techniques. The basics of ZBrushCore Mini, Blender, Adobe Illustrator and Fusion 360 will be covered. We will examine different techniques to identify the best workflow for various types of projects. Students can explore a variety of materials, such as plywood, acrylic glass and cardboard. Turn your ideas into objects with the precision of laser and CNC technology.
NOTE: The studio fee includes safety equipment, access to electronic media workstations, 3D printing materials and laser cutting. Access to SVA Sculpture Center outside of class time is not available. Artwork created using CNC equipment, laser cutter, CNC ShopBot and rapid prototyping machines may incur additional material fees based on the individual project. All other materials must be purchased by the student. This course is held on campus at SVA.
