Come with an open mind and leave this course with a series of narrative paintings in black-and-white. Throughout art history, master painters have harnessed the power of light and dark, geometry, scale, proportion and pattern to create memorable visual stories. We will dissect the anatomy of great painting compositions and use black-and-white acrylic paint and collage techniques to compose our own compelling narrative art. These composition tools can then be used to produce finished paintings, portfolios, or be applied to any visual content creation. The first three class sessions will feature simple exercises to experiment with visual storytelling that derives from epic narratives, folk stories, or your life experiences. The remaining two sessions will focus on developing a series of narrative paintings that can stand alone or be part of a larger work. No prior visual arts experience is necessary; all levels welcome.
