A new perspective to portrait painting is the focus of this course. Exaggerating line, color, form and shape we will go beyond realism and portray the model through distortion, expression and mood. Using Da Vinci and Vermeer influences, the course begins with a classic structure to the portrait, and then quickly move to the surrealists, futurists, Dadaists and expressionists, all through portraiture. Transcending realism, our reference points will go to Dalí, Warhol and Basquiat. Wet-on-wet painting techniques, glazing and impasto will be explored, as well as working with unconventional materials-painting on wood and metal, adding sand and beeswax to the paint. Models are present during each session. Throughout the semester pieces for portfolio inclusion will be completed. Open to students at all levels.
NOTE: Please bring paints and canvas (18x24") to the first session. This course is held on campus at SVA.
