Digital tools create exciting opportunities for the ancient arts of painting and printmaking. We will begin by considering mark making and multiples. Starting with old school methods-the potato print and hand cut stencils-we will move on to designing files for woodblock and relief printing that will be cut by laser or CNC router. This course will expand to use other fabrication methods to "paint" and print, including UV print for direct printing on 3D materials, heat press for printing on alternative soft materials/fabric and 3D printing for stamp creation. Students should be proficient in Adobe software and are invited to bring in digital imagery to incorporate within their final mixed media prints and paintings. Sessions are held in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility and fabrication space.
NOTE: The materials fee will cover basic processes for the course; however, they may vary based on the size and quantity of student output. Students should be ready to pay for additional material expenses via credit or debit card at the end of each session. This course is held on campus at SVA.
