More and more people are exploring ceramics to relieve stress, explore their creativity, focus their minds and surround themselves with beauty. This course aims to expand and deepen people's awareness and practice by introducing key developments in the rich history of modern ceramics. The focal point in this exploration is mingei: a Japanese folk-craft movement that began in the 1920s. We will see how mingei and its influence helped artists and ceramicists across the globe create new and arresting forms, and articulate a complex relationship to standardization and the rise of consumer capitalism. We'll discuss the ideas of Bernard Leach and Soetsu Yanagi, through to contemporary potters such as Theaster Gates and Edmund de Waal. Throughout, we'll keep a focus on functional clay pottery, incorporating key objects and styles into our visual vocabulary, while continually engaging with questions around the relationship of art and craft and the ideological role of orientalism and nationalism. This course is ideally suited for the ceramics practitioner looking to expand the range of their making, for the curious looking to explore global art history, and for creatives seeking greater specificity and beauty in the objects that surround them.
