This course will introduce the field of furniture design through hands-on processes, including sketching, model making and basic fabrication techniques. Emphasis will be put on developing original concepts through iteration and exploration of materials and processes. By the end of the course students will have fabricated a small scale prototype. Lectures will address the expansive field of furniture design, from mass-manufactured objects to studio furniture. No previous design or fabrication experience is required. Sessions are held in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility.
NOTE: The materials fee covers a set amount of modeling and construction materials, including but not limited to chipboard, foam, plywood, screws, and sandpaper. Additional materials are available for purchase. This course is held on campus at SVA.
