Lighting significantly defines our environment, but how do we have more control over it? This course will explore the design process and technical skills needed to conceptualize and fabricate a custom-designed light. Students will learn about a variety of lighting types from incandescent to LED. Through research, discussion and hands-on making, students will find sources of inspiration, sketch and design a light, and learn the fabrication skills necessary to build a lamp. Lectures range from design research processes to the history of lighting design to light diffusion. By the end of this course students will have wired both incandescent and LED lighting, as well as designed and built their own custom lamp. Sessions are held in the Visible Futures Lab, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility.
Note: The materials fee covers materials, including wire, soldering tools, and an assortment of lighting components. This course is held on campus at SVA.
