Working with professional models and equipment, this course will cover how to light people and still life across a range of themes. Each week a specific lighting style, and various ways to achieve it, will be addressed. We will explore the lighting principles and hardware used to create the images we see online and in print. Using the technical information in the reflections, highlights and shadows of existing imagery, students will then incorporate that knowledge to deconstruct and implement sophisticated lighting with the goal of developing a personal style. While this course has no prerequisites, students should be familiar with their camera's basic exposure controls (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO).
NOTE: Lighting equipment, light meters, models and seamless backgrounds will be provided. Students must supply their own digital or film cameras with manual exposure settings and a hot-shoe or PC flash sync connection. This course is held on campus at SVA.
