Podcasts have arrived. In 2014, when "Serial" became podcasting's first huge hit, Apple Podcasts reached 1 billion podcast subscriptions; currently about 89 million Americans listen to podcasts on a weekly basis. And year on year, podcast audiences are growing. During this renaissance, audio journalism has proven itself especially relevant for today's writers and content-makers. In this workshop, we will focus on one of the essential building blocks for powerful podcast creation: writing for the ear. In part one, you will be given an overview on creating nonfiction podcasts; then we will focus on writing for the spoken word, and you will write and record your own audio essays. In part two, students will listen to and critique each other's work. You'll leave this workshop with the tools to start writing your own podcast scripts.
NOTE: This course is sponsored by the MA Design, Research Writing and Criticism Department, School of Visual Arts. It is fully online and offered through synchronous sessions during the listed course hours.
