This course examines the process of adapting works of art into new forms, focusing on how books, poems, plays and paintings are transformed into film and other mediums. Students will study a range of adaptations, including page-to-screen translations, film remakes and unconventional reinterpretations. Through the study of scripts, original texts and related scholarship, we will examine the choices involved in adaptation-what is kept, what is changed and why. We will also explore how to read and analyze screenplay formats, gaining an understanding of how scripts are crafted to guide the filmmaking process. This course encourages students to think critically about how art evolves and inspires in new forms. No background in film or adaptation required.
Note: This course is fully online and offered through synchronous sessions during the listed course hours.
