This course will investigate the potential of drawing as a feminist tool of expression. Looking at 20th & 21st century artists like Nancy Spero, Adrian Piper, Wendy Red-Star, Dani ReStack, and others, we will develop a rigorous drawing practice that engages with feminism, art history, and our lived experiences. Through collaborative and individual assignments, we will ask: What can a feminist art practice look like? How do the formal elements of drawing lend themselves to feminist expression? Additionally, we will probe traditional art-making techniques-locating their ideological conditions and discussing the entanglements between art and power. Although anchored in the studio, this course will also include lectures and readings (in and outside of class) that will inform visual prompts, discussion and projects.
Note: This course is held on campus at SVA.
