Pablo Picasso said, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Rudolf Arnheim noted, "Art is continually working to take the crust of familiarity off everyday objects." This course was conceived from the belief that art is all around us in the everyday. From Marcel Duchamp's readymades to Richard Tuttle's humble materials, we will examine the various ways artists engage with the everyday through their work. Students will acquire the language to understand, discuss and think critically through exploring the work of artists such as Rachel Perry, El Anatsui, Maren Hassinger and Theaster Gates. We will look at their creative processes and how they make meaning out of the quotidian. We will discuss topics such as the art/life dichotomy, everyday aesthetics, materiality, storytelling, rag-and-bone and domesticity. Students will experiment with found/used materials from their surroundings and, through a guided, exploratory process, create artworks that will be critiqued by their peers and a visiting artist.
