At the School of Visual Arts, we can't be more serious when we talk about comics. In the 1940s the College began as a training ground for some of the pioneers of the Golden Age of Cartooning. In this course students create an eight-page comic from start to finish. We will look at cartooning as a powerful medium for all kinds of storytelling and idea exploration, focusing on both artist and author. Students create their own characters and illustrate their own story using a narrative prompt. Practical steps such as scripting, thumbnail sketches, page layout sketches, penciling and inking, lettering and basic perspective will be taught. Students are encouraged to use a stream of consciousness and free association with narrative exercises. Through drawing students will gain experience with contour, proportions perspective and anatomy of the figure by collecting photo reference for figures and environments. Inking and digital color techniques will be investigated. All of these elements come together with students creating their own comic book or webcomic.
