Fine Arts: Painting and Drawing

July 7 - 25 | 3 Undergraduate Studio Credits
Faculty
To be announced
Artists must develop not only technical skills, but also an awareness of the historical and cultural contexts of their work. This class is designed for students who wish to combine studio art with the study of art history. Students will learn concepts such as perspective, composition, and expression by looking at examples from throughout the history of art and then applying this knowledge in the studio. Class projects include life drawing, collage, and sculpture. Field trips to museums and galleries will allow students to interact with art and artifacts firsthand.
This class is drawing and painting from direct observation. Projects will be assigned to study the formal elements of art, such as line, space, scale and texture. Materials will include pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and wash among others. Painting will be focused on the use of oil painting on canvas and canvas board. Students will work from still life setups and models. Half of the day will be painting with the students' painting teacher and the second half of the day will be drawing with the students' drawing teacher. Students will have a variety of experience levels. Teachers will encourage students and gear instruction toward their individual level of experience. Students will participate in critique sessions. No previous experience required.
Please note: Pre-College courses may include the use of nude models. Course curriculum and faculty are subject to change.
