Here we are in New York City, where buildings and interior spaces are considered to be some of the best in the world. What better city to study and shape the places we live, work and play? This course is designed to help each student explore design principles and develop a personal vision about the spaces we live in. Basic design principles for the architecture of the interior will be introduced through two- and three-dimensional projects. Students will begin with a small product design for the interior, such as a stool or table for a unique function (making spaghetti or eating ice cream for example), and then will design a real space, such as a small retail store or a café. The importance of the scale of a person will be explored through designing an object that relates to human size and human function, and then applied to a whole space. How sustainability can help people live healthier and better lives will be examined. Students will also learn how designers create the world we live in. The projects designed in this course can serve as portfolio pieces for students applying to colleges with majors in interior design or architecture.
