This course offers students a conceptual approach to art making, specifically painting, with an emphasis on the interaction between text and imagery. Students will be introduced to unconventional techniques and create visually complex works in response to contemporary literature and poetry. Each session will begin with a brief "free" writing/drawing period. Prompts for projects will be conceptual in their makeup or inspired by a piece of text, such as a poem or a passage from a novel. Some assignments will begin with writing in response to a prompt that then takes the form of a painting. After each project, students will hone their skills through group critiques and feedback. This is a perfect course for students looking to expand both their art practice and their ability to analyze it critically, while gaining an understanding of how the literary and visual arts intersect.
