Drawing Art History in Provence
May 26 - Jun 10
$ 5500
This unique class combines drawing and studying art history to explore and understand the extraordinary south of France. We will investigate the grandeur of Provence and its Romanesque and Gothic monuments by visiting the museums, sites and towns the region is famous for. We will focus on the contemporary masters who worked there, most notably Cezanne and Van Gogh. We will visit Arles to see the spectacular Roman Arena, the site where Van Gogh's "Yellow House" once stood, and Saint Remy de Provence, where he painted "Starry Night". In Aix-en-Provence we will sketch in Cezanne's studio and in Avignon - the daily markets, museums, and magnificent Pope's Palace will be our studios. Of course, the cuisine, crafts and daily culture of the Provencal lifestyle will heavily inform our class.
