Destinations

Mexico has a long history of expansive gender identities and expressions, as well as feminist and queer cultural icons, such as artist Frida Kahlo, singer Chavela Vargas, trans Zapatista soldier Amelio Robles Ávila and Oaxacan Muxe artist Nelson Morales. Currently, Mexico City is in a queer and trans community explosion of activism, academia and art, as well as community building (such as La Comuna Lencha Trans and Manos Amigues). This course will study the transgressive activists, artists, writers, filmmakers and thinkers who have and are radically changing the understanding and human rights of gender and sexual minorities. We will meet with artists, activists, congresswomen and academics from the trans and queer community. The program includes trips to museums, community spaces and events, as well as studio visits and connecting with local university lecturers.
COURSE OBJECTIVES Students will understand the important place Muxe gendered people take in Oaxacan tradition. Students will be able to identify and understand Mexican historical events and their impact on art/film history. Students will learn how the art process is involved in activism and community building in Mexico City.
Tuition includes: Hotel, breakfast, welcome/farewell dinners, all excursions/museum entrance fees
