Breaking into Hollywood's movie industry is difficult enough as it is, and even more so for people who don't adhere to gender norms. “We all exist in so many worlds, but trans folks, especially, have a different way of compartmentalizing. Sometimes it's hard to integrate," artist and alumnus Zackary Drucker (BFA 2005 Photography) tells Out. The magazine recently interviewed Drucker, a transgender woman, about her experience working as an associate producer on Transparent, Amazon's award-winning series.

Working for a major production, with a crew of almost 100 people, was a shocking change for Drucker, who was previously used to the isolation and freedom of her own personal artistic practice. "The stakes are a lot higher than when you're working for yourself," she says. But there are obvious benefits to a more prominent platform: "There is considerable interest right now in telling our stories, but there are still so many barriers—more barriers than most folks are aware of," she says. "At best, you're able to inspire somebody, inspire hope. At best, we're able to expand people's notions of difference, especially when it comes to trans stories.”
