SVACE: Participating in an art fair requires some professional preparation, including presentation, inventory lists, meeting with collectors and more. What does that preparation entail for you, in this case?

YCO: Some of the key things in my preparation included selecting appropriate works, supplying the organizers with my work details and installation requirements, proposing a layout and general logistics of transporting from Baltimore (where I am based) to NYC. All part and parcel of being an exhibiting artist.

SVACE: Could you describe your experience with SVA? What did you gain from your time with SVA?

YCO: I had a transformative two years in SVA’s MFA Fine Arts program. Besides deepening my practice and inquiry, I gained an incredible community and network that I am grateful to continue being a part of. I was also lucky to be offered a faculty position after graduation and to be able to pay it forward through teaching.

SVACE: Most artists exhibiting at art fairs have transitioned through a variety of bodies of work. Is this true for you? If so, how would you characterize your transition?

YCO: Art fair or not, I believe most, if not all, artists go through many different bodies of work. I also believe that most artists don’t get to “choose” what they make. Often, the medium chooses us and we have to work with it. My transition between different bodies of work has mostly been unplanned but very stimulating and inspiring when it happens through the right mix of circumstances. These moves usually occur as paradigm shifts for me and often without me even realizing it until after it has taken place.
