The Fine Arts Summer Residency for an international community
This July, SVA Continuing Education will open its campus facilities to participants in the Contemporary Practices Summer Residency. Contemporary Practices is an intensive, studio-based residency designed for artists working in a variety of practices. From medium-specific to interdisciplinary and cross-platform modes of production, resident artists will converge at the intersection of art and ideas.
SVACE welcomes artists from around the world to work in the MFA Fine Arts studios for the program's return to campus as New York City reopens and recovers from the pandemic. Contemporary Practices will operate concurrently with our online interdisciplinary residency, The Artist Residency Project, and will nurture and grow the artistic practices of our international community of artists – whether they will be working in the studio on campus in Manhattan or remotely from around the globe.
Hosted by SVA’s MFA Fine Arts Department with members of its distinguished faculty, Contemporary Practice residents will create art in studios adjacent to Manhattan's art galleries, museums, and alternative spaces. Daily studio visits from leaders in art and culture will support an ongoing discourse among resident artists. In addition to concentrated work in the studio, artists will attend lectures, gallery walks, museum visits and workshops that support a professional art practice, creative engagement, and a variety of contemporary perspectives. Ultimately, participants will be encouraged to take their work to the next level.
Contemporary Practices residents will have access to SVA's Visible Futures Lab, with state-of-the-art tools for both digital and traditional fabrication; the printmaking studio is available for an additional fee. The program culminates in an open studio exhibition.
