Magdalena Dukiewicz is a Polish-born visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Complutense University in Madrid.

Dukiewicz's solo presentations include Ivy Brown Gallery, The Border Project Space and Stand4 Gallery. Her installations have been selected for the inaugural show at BioBAT Art Space and SciArt Center exhibition in New York. She was featured during Berlin Art and Science Week. Her works have been included in group exhibitions in Camden Art Centre in London, Museum of Jurassic Technology in LA, Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, among others. Dukiewicz is a recipient of the Nessa Cohen Grant for Sculpture and a grant from the Polish Minister of Culture and Heritage. She was a resident at the studio of Carlos Amorales in Mexico City and with the Bio Art Residency at SVA NYC. She will be a resident artist at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY in 2023.

Artist Statement:

With a multidisciplinary approach, my practice is a combination of material experimentation and method. I use organic materials like hydrolyzed collagen, bones, soil, hair, and blood among others, in combination with found materials. I play with those culturally and politically charged bodily products and recontextualize them into works of art, exploring how their perceptions are linked to the changing contexts. Through the use of atypical materials outside of the sculptural norm I resist a trend-driven system and undermine the monetary value of artworks as luxury goods. My installations are bound with the idea of temporality and constant transformation. They aim to engage several important issues, consumerism, environment, gender, and identity, including notions of “other” and “self” in reference to a multicultural concept, politics and migration. I choose materials for their innate characteristics based on the topic I explore. Each piece provokes visceral reactions while playfully welcoming open-ended associations and ambiguities.
