Through Monday, July 17 | MFA Photography, Video and Related Media 2023 Thesis Exhibition | SVA Chelsea Gallery

An exhibition of work by the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media class of 2023, curated by Nat Trotman, curator, Performance and Media, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Of the exhibition, Trotman says, “As they grapple with issues of connection and disconnection, alienation and communion, freedom and control, the artists assembled in this exhibition and its related screening program reexamine reality and interrogate the ways in which we collectively navigate its complexities.”

SVA Continuing Education presents an art activation in the Flatiron Plaza. The slogan “Art is...” stands in long tradition with SVA. For decades, the College has produced over 180 posters for the New York City subway system—many of them addressing the question of what “art is.” This summer, the public is invited to write their ideas, thoughts and feelings around the concept of art and how it resonates with each of us. The piece was designed by SVA faculty member and artist Stephen Gaffney.

An exhibition of thesis work by the MFA Fine Arts class of 2023, curated by SVA faculty member, curator and writer Sara Raza. Poetically exploring the artist’s hand as a conceptual and critical tool, this exhibition weaves together drawing, installation, painting, sculpture and video. It addresses interconnected themes of rebellion, recreation, recollection, reconstruction and repair. Taking a decentralized approach, “The Hand of the Artist” features the works of 38 intergenerational artists whose practices unite local, global and digital viewpoints from a fast-evolving and complex world.
