Whether you’re seeking artistic inspiration or learning something new, there are plenty of remaining opportunities this semester to hear from professional artists on various topics. Discover how other artists approach their practice, research their ideas and channel them all into artwork in a series of talks from MFA Fine Arts, MPS Digital Photography and MA Curatorial Practice.

On Tuesday, November 21, MFA Fine Arts welcomes Wong Kit Yi, an artist whose participatory experiences merge video and performance to raise questions that probe identity and time parameters; in her relational karaoke-lecture performances, she moves fluidly between the voices of academia, memoir, philosophy and song. Also on November 21, MA Curatorial Practice welcomes Chie Fueki for another installment of its Artist Roundtable series. Fueki employs a complex system of painting, drawing, cutting and collaging onto wood panels to create work that embraces the visual language from the three distinct cultures she has experienced as a Japanese-born artist growing up in Brazil and currently practicing in the United States.

The last week of November boasts a busy Tuesday. On November 28, MFA Fine Arts presents Ben Moren, a media artist whose “mixed reality” projects explore human perception and our relationship with the natural environment through filmmaking, performance, sculpture, sound and custom software systems. Afterward, MA Curatorial Practice talks to faculty member Marilyn Minter, whose recent photography book Elder Sex has been featured in The Guardian, The New York Times and CNN for its uninhibited look at “unconventional” bodies that challenge traditional visions of sex.

To close out the day, MPS Digital Photography’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series—hosted and curated this fall by faculty member Julie Grahame—welcomes Brooklyn-based photographer, filmmaker and writer M. Sharkey, whose long-term project documenting LGBT teens in America and abroad, Queer Kids, has had solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. He is also a co-founder of Coffey Street Studio, a warehouse studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and of the collective Coordinated Artists, a group of performers, writers, directors, composers, designers and cinematographers working in film, theater, performance and installation.

Guest practitioners will speak on performance art, filmmaking, painting, photography and more in events throughout the rest of the semester.
