MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with SVA alumnus Nancy Scherl, a fine art photographer specializing in portraiture, as part of its i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Stylistically, Scherl uses cinéma vérité and invokes metaphor and social commentary through her imagery. In her series, “Dining Alone in the Company of Solitude,” Scherl stages restaurant interiors and asks her subjects to act out how they feel when dining alone in a restaurant. She also photographs social documentary projects.

MA Curatorial Practice presents a talk with Michael Connor, co-executive director of Rhizome. At Rhizome, Connor has overseen the Net Art Anthology initiative, an effort to retell the history of net art through 100 works, presented as an online exhibition, gallery exhibition and book.

This drawing marathon session offered by SVA Continuing Education and BFA Visual & Critical Studies encourages participants to work freely and expressively. Led by artist, faculty member and SVA alumnus Peter Hristoff, this is a fast-paced session of nonstop, one-minute drawings using prompts, figure models and museum images to inspire the participants to work. This session requires an open mind and willingness to let go. Open to all levels of drawing experience.

MA Curatorial Practice presents a talk with Fatima Bintou Rassoul SY, curator of programs at RAW Material Company. She has worked for years in hospitality and cultural mediation at institutions such as the Musée du Louvre, the Musée Rodin, the Grand Palais and the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Her research focuses on the cultural policies of Senegal from the 1960s to today, along with the market dynamics that act on the contemporary art scene of the African continent and its diaspora. She graduated from the master’s program in exhibition sciences and techniques at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and lives and works in Dakar, Senegal.

BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the SVA Honors Program present art critic Ben Davis to discuss his new essay collection on the meaning of art in the face of today’s climate and capitalist catastrophes, Art in the After-Culture (2022). Davis has been Artnet News’s national art critic since 2016.

MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with photographer Amy Arbus, part of its i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series. Arbus has published five books, including the award-winning On the Street 1980 – 1990, The Inconvenience of Being Born and The Fourth Wall. Her most recent photography series, “After Images,” is an homage to modernism’s iconic avant-garde paintings. Her advertising clients include Marina Rinaldi, Chiat/Day, Foote, Cone and Belding, American Express, Saatchi & Saatchi, SpotCo, New Line Cinema and Nickelodeon. Her photographs have appeared in over 100 periodicals around the world, including Aperture, New York, The New York Times Magazine and People. Arbus is represented by The Schoolhouse Gallery in Massachusetts.

MA Curatorial Practice presents Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide, exhibitions curator at Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Previously, Zola Zoli van der Heide was deputy director at Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons. She has been a tutor at the Dutch Art Institute’s Roaming Academy, a thesis advisor in the fine arts department at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam and a board member at Kunstituut Melly, Rotterdam. Her interests lie in intersecting perspectives and modes that decenter the oppressor in practices of freedom and liberation to influence art institutional practices.
