Tell us about your project. What inspired the idea?

I have developed a new concept called “Dimensional Alt Text,” which enables blind and low-vision users to navigate image descriptions through three-dimensional layers. It assists users in building a mental image of the photo, resulting in a better spatial understanding of photos on the web and social media.

Before joining the program, I worked as a product designer. I always had a passion for working on projects related to assistive technologies, and the thesis project was the perfect stage for me to explore this field further.

What most surprised you once you started working on the project?

Once I started working on the digital image accessibility project, I realized that there were already several efforts and findings being made in this area by outstanding researchers and designers. However, there was still a lot of room for improvement and innovation.

What was a highlight of living and studying in New York City?

The gallery scene and art museums are always incomparable, and creative people are working on cool projects you’ve never imagined.

What is something you learned at SVA that you’ll always take with you?

People are more generous than we think they are. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Was there a teacher or course that was essential for you?

While I took many classes that expanded my knowledge, the thesis research class taught by Pierre Alexandre de Looz in my third semester was particularly helpful in developing my research and analysis skills. Although I wasn’t initially a strong researcher or writer, I learned to explore related work, synthesize research findings and improve my writing skills through the course.

What was your favorite piece of advice that a teacher or student shared with you?

During a guest lecture, writer Cliff Kuang shared a valuable insight that has become an integral aspect of my design process: “Find a real problem, then the great design will follow. Most poor designs are created for nonexistent problems.” Since then, I have incorporated this wisdom into my work, helping me to focus on designing solutions that address genuine issues.

What advice do you have for next year’s students going through your program?

Be open to feedback and all possibilities, but trust your intuition and unique perspective and stand by your ideas.
