Nichole Washington (MPS 2016 Digital Photography)

Nichole Washington is a visual artist based in New York City who makes mixed-media works focused on identity, spirituality and communication. The unique symbols painted in Washington’'s work are inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphs and Adinkra symbols from West Africa, and she describes them as a secret form of communication and protection. In 2017 she received an Enfoco Photography Fellowship, and her art has been featured in spaces like the National Afro- American Museum and Cultural Center, the Black Girls Code headquarters in San Francisco, The New Yorker, HBO and, again, SVA’s Visual Arts Journal.
