School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “balance: community, care & compassion,” an exhibition of multimedia artworks by MPS Art Therapy students and the people they work with at their internship sites. Curated by Liz DelliCarpini, department internship coordinator and faculty member, the exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, February 15, through Thursday, March 3, online at sva.edu and at the Flatiron Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York, NY 10011.
During these challenging times, the artists in this exhibition seek to create an environment that balances community, care and compassion, where we can all receive and provide care in ways that center the lived experiences of people who confront social marginalization. The viewer’s involvement is viewed as a key aspect of community art therapy practice, opening opportunities for people to contribute, gain recognition and receive social support within our collective community. The therapeutic goals of “balance: community, care & compassion” are to support each other and acknowledge and respect our differences.
MPS Art Therapy is an immersive two-year, 60-credit program that prepares students to become licensed, credentialed art therapists. It integrates the experiential components of art therapy within a comprehensive framework of academic theory, clinical application via an internship program, and art practice. Students learn to adapt the creative process to the specific therapeutic needs of the individual, population and setting, with a consideration of how systems of theoretical and social constructs impact treatment. SVA believes in active engagement with the community at large, which allows for utilization of the diverse, innovative, creative atmosphere of New York City and beyond to enhance training.
The SVA Flatiron Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm. In accordance with SVA COVID-19 protocols, in-person viewing is open to SVA students, faculty and staff. The public may visit by showing proof of full vaccination (including booster, if eligible) and photo ID. All visitors to the Flatiron Gallery must pre-register by requesting an appointment from arttherapy@sva.edu. Proper masking is required.
